Independent online news websites in Canada

What this page is: A list of independent online newsgathering websites in Canada, i.e. those that cover news, but which are not affiliated with a newspaper, magazine, radio or television station or wire service or syndicate. They get original quotes, photos and so on and have staff and/or freelance journalists who go out and cover news events regularly, just as a traditional print or broadcast media outlet would.

What this page is not: There are many excellent sites that contain some news but primarily exist for other reasons and these are not listed. For example, the many sites that simply comment on news from other sources, but don't gather much of their own are not included. We don't list individual blogs, such as Boing Boing. Sites that mainly link to other sites for news content, such as Bourque Newswatch, aren't below. Also not here are individual "citizen journalists" who happened to be in the right place at the right time to get a photo with their cellphone and post it on Yahoo's Flickr or Google's YouTube.
