2018
- July 28: Postmedia Network, owner of the Pembroke Daily Observer, announced June 26 that the publication would cease daily publication on July 28.
- July 1: SaltWire Network shifted the Truro Daily News and the New Glasgow Evening News from daily to weekly publications.
- April 10: The Metro newspapers in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Halifax were rebranded StarMetro Toronto, StarMetro Vancouver, StarMetro Calgary, StarMetro Edmonton and StarMetro Halifax.
2017
- Dec. 30: Montreal La Presse stopped printing Saturday editions, going digital-only with a daily tablet edition.
- Dec. 15: Star News Publishing announced it has reached an agreement with Prince Albert Daily Herald employees to undergo an "employee buyout" that will see staff take control of the paper.
- Dec. 7: In early November, the Moose Jaw Times Herald announced it would release its last issue Dec. 7.
- Nov. 27: Postmedia sold nine daily newspapers (and several weeklies) to Torstar; in return, Torstar sold a number of community papers and two dailies to Postmedia. The St. Catharines Standard, Niagara Falls Review, Welland Tribune and Peterborough Examiner will continue to be operated by Torstar, however, the company closed five of the purchased papers effective immediately: 24 Hours Toronto, 24 Hours Vancouver, Barrie Examiner, Cobourg's Northumberland Today and Orillia Packet and Times. Postmedia closed the two dailies it purchased, Metro Ottawa and Metro Winnipeg, effective immediately.
- April 27: Transcontinental has begun a process for the sale of its newspapers in Quebec and Ontario including Métro Montréal.
- April 13: Transcontinental sold its daily newspapers in Atlantic Canada to the Halifax Herald's new company, SaltWire Network.
2016
- Sept. 27: Black Press launched Vancouver Island Free Daily.
- May 30: Transcontinental sold its Saskatchewan newspapers including dailies Moose Jaw Times Herald and Prince Albert Daily Herald to Star News Publishing.
- March: The Alaska Highway News reduced publishing frequency to weekly.
- Jan. 29: Black Press closed the Nanaimo Daily News after 141 years of publishing.
- Jan. 29: Torstar discontinued the Guelph Mercury as a daily newspaper, however, the name lives on in the website of the twice-weekly Guelph Tribune.
- Jan. 1: Chinese World Journal editions ceased publication in Toronto and Vancouver to better focus their business in the United States.
- Jan. 1: Montreal La Presse stopped printing weekday editions, going digital-only with a tablet edition. The Saturday editions continue to be printed.
- Also in 2016: The Cranbrook Daily Townsman and Kimberley Daily Bulletin reduced their publication schedule to three days a week.

- July 11: Torstar closed its Metro newspapers in Regina, Saskatoon and London.
- May 29: T.O.Night, which had reduced its publishing schedule to twice a week in January 2013, finally closed.
- March: The Black Press free daily newspaper, Nanaimo News Bulletin Daily ceased publication March 2014. The community newspaper, Nanaimo News Bulletin, remains in publication.
- Feb. 3: Glacier's Fort St. John Alaska Highway News assimilated the Dawson Creek Daily News, which ceased publishing separately.
- Jan. 11: Glacier's Kamloops Daily News ceased publishing.
2013
- December: Comox Valley Record Daily/Campbell River Mirror Daily ceased publication.
- November: Victoria News Daily and Golden Ears Daily ceased publication.
- Aug. 2: Sun Media shut down free commuter papers 24 Hours Edmonton, 24 Hours Calgary and 24 Hours Ottawa on this day.
- July 26: The Amherst Daily News ended its 120-hear run as a daily newspaper and was replaced by a weekly.
- May: Fraser Valley Daily ceased publication.
- March: The Portage la Prairie Daily Graphic moved to weekly. Meanwhile, the Cowichan News Leader Pictorial Daily ceased publication.

- Ceased publication: Quebecor's Sarnia Sun and Chatham Sun free dailies have folded as did 24 Heures Gatineau-Ottawa on May 9, 2008. So have Torstar/Metroland's Northumberland News Free Daily and Niagara This Week Free Daily, although Metroland's community papers continue in those markets. Canwest Global's free dailies, Ottawa RushHour, Calgary RushHour and Edmonton RushHour have folded and its national free daily, Dose has also folded, although it continues as a website. Halifax Daily News (1974–Feb. 12, 2008) was replaced by Metro Halifax later in the week. Whistler Today and Squamish Today were local free dailies that launched by Glacier Media in 2006. They closed March 2008.
- Mergers: Black Press has merged some free dailies, including the Campbell River Mirror Daily into the Comox Valley Record Daily and the Parksville Qualicum Beach News Daily into the Nanaimo News Bulletin Daily. They also merged the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News Daily and the Port Coquitlam Tri-City News Daily into the Langley Golden Ears Daily. Quebecor's Port Hope Guide merged with Cobourg Daily Star and Colborne Chronicle (which wasn't a daily) to create Northumberland Today.
- Formerly daily: Osprey Media's Lindsay Post reduced publication to twice a week as of May 18, 2007, while the Kirkland Lake Northern News dropped to three times a week prior to their sale to
Quebecor. The independent Flin Flon Reminder has also reduced publication to three times a week. Polish newspaper Gazeta (Toronto ed.) has dropped to three times a week according to their about us page. Black Press has reduced the free Terrace-Kitimat-Prince Rupert Northern Daily to three times a week but has added Smithers/Bulkley Valley and Houston papers to the area it covers.
